INSTITUTE AND LABORATORY
The WCCAP is hosted by the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research under the Atmospheric Microphysics Department. Our expertise draws from more than two decades of high-level of research of aerosol processes and properties and novel measurement techniques. The WCCAP is also part of the CAIS-ECAC under ACTRIS. Here, aside from the services, based on our expertise, we provide recommendations and guidelines for instrument selection, calibration and standard-operating procedures, and complete station set-up.
WCCAP EXPERTS
Our team is comprised of scientists with more than a decade of experience in high level research of atmospheric particle process, technical innovations and data processing and management. Our experts lead the calibration and intercomparison workshops hosted in TROPOS as well as the training of station managers and instrument users around the world.
LABORATORIES
In 2022, the state-of-the art WCCAP laboratories have been renovated and their conditions optimized.
The WCCAP laboratories are specifically equipped to assure the quality of the instruments deployed for in-situ measurements of priority atmospheric variables.
MPSS Laboratory
–
The MPSS laboratory is designed to quality check particle mobility size spectrometers for particle sizes from 3 nm according to ISO 15900:2020 and CEN/TS 17434 2020. Both of which are co-authored by WCCAP scientists. In addition, this laboratory is also equipped to calibrate and characterize CCNCs.
CPC Laboratory
–
The CPC laboratory is equipped to verify the detection efficiency of the counters for different particle sizes. The primary standard for particle number concentrations in our laboratory is a Faraday cup aerosol electrometer which is regularly calibrated by the German National Metrology Institute. The laboratory and procedures are designed and made according to ISO 27891:2015 and EN 16976:2024 (formerly CEN/TS 16976:2016).
Optics Laboratory
–
The optics laboratory hosts the calibration and quality check of instruments measuring optical properties of aerosols, most commonly absorption photometers and integrating nephelometers. Our lab uses primary standard methods and secondary standard instruments. For traceable intercomparisons, our lab is equipped with particle generators using standard materials.

Coarse-mode Laboratory
–
The coarse-mode laboratory is an experimental lab created to develop state-of-the-art techniques for calibration and characterization of instruments measuring coarse-mode particles.

DATA MANAGEMENT
Our technical expertise in instrumentation and aerosol physics also extends to the data produced. We provide data acquisition and processing algorithms which contains all the science-based corrections necessary prior to sharing to an open repository. In the framework of ACTRIS and CAMS, we are also producing near-real-time software for different instruments.
COOPERATION WITH MANUFACTURER and POLICY-MAKERS
The WCCAP works closely with manufacturers such as TSI, GRIMM, Airmodus, AVL, PALAS, Magee Scientific, Aurora, Aerosol d.o.o, etc., to better understand and optimize their instruments and provide our stakeholders reliable guidelines for instrumentation. This has led to the creation of several standards (ISO, CEN, VDI).
PALAS AVL
From here, we provide our expertise and services to national, European, and international agencies, particularly in the operation of measurement stations.
